What's a shaft?
There are two types of shafts: steel shafts, which are made from metal, and carbon shafts, which are made from carbon fiber.
Driver often come with carbon shafts, while other clubs sometimes offer a choice between steel and carbon shafts.
The shaft's role is not only to help you hit the ball further by using its flex, but also to stabilize your swing and reduce directional inconsistencies through its weight, stiffness, and the point where it flexes the most (the kick point).
Shaft and distance
Many people say things like, "The shaft is everything when it comes to golf clubs!" or "Distance is determined by the shaft!" However, no matter how good the shaft is, you won't get good results if the club head isn't a good match.
What changes when the shaft is different?
Hardness (FLEX)
Typically, women's products often have L and A firmness settings, while men's products often have R, S, and intermediate settings like SR.
| ← soft | Hard → | ||||
| L Women's (Recommended head speed: ~32 m/s) |
A average (Recommended head speed: 32-36 m/s) |
R regular (Recommended head speed: 37-40 m/s) |
SR Somewhere between S and R (Recommended head speed: 40-43 m/s) |
S Stiff (Recommended head speed: 43-46 m/s) |
X Extra (Recommended head speed: 46 m/s or higher) |
| ←For women | For men → | ||||
Those who previously played baseball or tennis may find a "stiffer" shaft more suitable because they have stronger swing power.
*However, please note that there is no standard stiffness for golf shafts, and even within the same manufacturer, an R-flex shaft used by a professional may have a similar stiffness to an S-flex shaft from a different brand.
Head speed and units
In the table above, HS is an abbreviation for Head Speed. The unit is m/s (meters per second), which represents how many meters are traveled per second. It is the same number as the speed per second used to express speed in vehicles, such as in kilometers per hour.
Incidentally, if you convert this to kilometers per hour, it's 3600 times faster, so if the head speed is 40 m/s, it becomes 144 km/h. Since an express train travels at 110-130 km/h, this means golfers are swinging their clubs at an incredible speed.

Weight
The weight of the shaft affects how easy it is to swing and how stable the club is. Generally, it is said that you should choose a heavier shaft that you can swing properly, but if it is too heavy, the club will become difficult to swing.
Conversely, combining a lightweight Driver with irons that have steel shafts can disrupt your swing rhythm and may lead to duffs or tops.
For example, if you have a favorite Driver, when choosing irons, you can select a shaft based on the weight of that Driver, allowing you to swing them with a similar rhythm.
Please refer to the table below to choose a club with a weight that suits you.
| Driver weight | Weight of a 5-iron | Weight of a 7-iron |
| 320g | Approximately 420g | Around 435g |
| 300g | Around 390g | Approximately 405g |
| 280g | Around 360g | Approximately 372g |

Kick point (flexibility)
A shaft with a tip that flexes, known as a "tip-weighted" shaft, results in a higher launch angle and makes it easier to hit the ball squarely.
Conversely, a shaft with a tip-heavy flex results in a lower launch angle and less ball contact.

length
Some people shorten the shafts of commercially available Driver and other clubs by cutting them, but this can result in a decrease in distance, poor balance, and an unstable swing.
Currently, most men's Driver on the market have shafts that are between 45 and 46 inches long, so it's a good idea to choose one that suits you within this range.

Even a slight difference in length can make a big difference in how easy it is to hit.

torque
The twist in the shaft is similar to the play in a car's steering wheel; less twist results in a more sensitive response and better control, but it also makes the club more susceptible to mistakes. More torque makes the response slower, but it increases the forgiveness of mis-shots.

About custom shafts
Recently, it's become common to see golf clubs sold with shafts other than the standard specifications, such as "custom shafts." Custom shafts are made by specialized shaft manufacturers, and some golf clubs also have shafts manufactured by these same shaft manufacturers as OEM products.
Custom shafts come in a wide variety of styles, allowing you to choose one that suits your needs. However, they use expensive materials and are therefore more costly. For this reason, they tend to be chosen more often by experienced golfers.
The shafts that come standard are generally easy to handle and don't have a strong, distinctive character, and their compatibility with the club head is often considered. You might want to start with a standard shaft rather than a custom one.
