What is the dress code for golf?
A dress code in golf is not a set of rules, but rather a set of manners.
There are approximately 2,200 golf courses in Japan, and you may be denied entry if you violate the dress code set by each golf course, so be sure to abide by it.
Especially prestigious golf courses have strict dress codes, so it's recommended to check their website or other sources before your first visit.
While the dress code may seem strict, you'll be fine if you wear typical attire. Therefore, we've created a guide that clearly illustrates what constitutes a typical dress code, along with a slightly more in-depth explanation of "the dress code."
Typical golf attire and generally inappropriate attire.
Golf has its own unique dress code, making it easy to remember, and many golfers are familiar with what constitutes unacceptable attire. Perhaps the most well-known dress code rule is "no denim."
You should assume that "once you step onto the entrance of a golf course, you must apply that golf course's dress code," and entering the clubhouse in casual attire is a breach of etiquette. Avoid inappropriate clothing not only during play but also when traveling to and from the course, and dress in accordance with the dress code.
Who decides the dress code?
Dress codes are primarily determined by the "Etiquette Committee," "Board of Directors," or "Fellowship Committee" organized within each members-only golf course. These committees are often responsible for managing memberships, approving new members, and establishing dress codes, all to ensure that members can play comfortably and respectfully on a daily basis.
Since it's difficult to cover the dress code of every golf course, we'll introduce golf attire that will get you by at most courses, along with the absolute minimum of clothing that is unacceptable.

Jackets and caps are surprisingly not very popular.
While many golf courses no longer require jackets during the summer months, some still recommend wearing a jacket over your arm when entering the course.
While not many golf courses require women to wear jackets, there's a long-standing, almost obligatory, idea that women should dress appropriately so as not to look out of place standing next to men wearing jackets. Therefore, if you're unsure, it's safest for women to wear (or carry) a jacket.
In addition, did you know that many golf courses recommend or require players to wear caps or visors year-round?
Almost no professional golfers competing in tournaments play without wearing a hat. This is because, in addition to being a matter of etiquette and dress code, hats also serve safety, practicality, and even act as advertising.
Golf spectator attire
While it's easy to dress casually because you're just watching, even at tournaments and competitions that don't have a strict dress code, prestigious courses often have dress codes for spectators, just like for the players.
Many golf courses prohibit spectators from wearing casual clothing such as jeans, hoodies, skirts, or sweatpants, and sandals, slippers, and women's high heels are often prohibited for safety reasons.
While there's no rule requiring spectators to wear golf attire, if you're unsure, it's safest to wear golf attire that adheres to the dress code.
Rather than focusing on fashion, please prioritize wearing clothing that allows you to move safely and comfortably with the athletes through the woods.
Strict dress code seen at prestigious establishments
Japan also has golf courses that are considered prestigious and those that are strictly for members only.
Many golf courses have a formal dress code, steeped in tradition and history, which serves as their "charter." These rules are often required to be followed by all visitors, including spectators.
Here's an example of the strict dress code you might find at such a prestigious course.
- Pants of any length other than knee-length are not permitted.
- Even for knee-length skirts, a slim fit is not acceptable.
- Women's camisoles are not allowed.
- Sleeveless tops are not permitted for women.
- Wearing leggings over shorts or skirts is not allowed.
- Denim clothing is not allowed, even if it's not pants.
And so on. If you ever have the opportunity to go to a prestigious golf course, you'll want to do more research than usual on dress codes and manners so as not to embarrass the members.

Golf courses that promote sports golf
While some golf courses, like prestigious ones, have strict dress codes, there are also a few membership-based golf courses in Japan that have eliminated dress code restrictions (emphasizing the sporting aspect).
With the aim of making golf accessible and flexible, there are golf courses where you can wear T-shirts and even flip-flops.
It's a place worth visiting at least once, offering a relaxed and casual golf experience at your own risk, offering a different kind of golfing experience.
Of course, even if there are no dress code restrictions, it doesn't mean it's lawless. It goes without saying that you should learn the rules of each golf course and remember to play with good manners.
Let's enjoy playing golf while respecting the rules of etiquette.
When you list these things out in writing, it's understandable that some people might get the impression that "golf is a very nitpicky sport." However, since you're playing at a facility that relies primarily on funds from golf course members, making selfish decisions will only cause trouble for others.
The more times you visit a golf course, the more you'll naturally understand what's acceptable, and you'll worry less about what to wear.
However, before each round, be sure to review the rules of the golf course, including the dress code.
