What is a golf utility club?
There are many different types of golf clubs, but they can be broadly divided into three categories: woods, irons, and putters. The utility club is a historically new club that does not fall into these categories and has functions that are intermediate between woods and irons.
The name varies depending on the manufacturer, but they are commonly called utility or hybrid.
What type of utility?
Utilities are broadly divided into two types: woods and irons.
- Wood-type utility club
-
It has a rounded head shape like a fairway wood, and is characterized by its large head and deep center of gravity, which gives it the advantage of making it easier to launch the ball into the air and making it resistant to mishits.
This type is easy to use and is especially recommended for golfers who are not good at fairway woods, as well as beginners and average golfers. - Iron-type utility club
-
As the name suggests, it has a sharp head shape like an iron.
The center of gravity is higher than that of a wood club, making it easier to maneuver, making it suitable for golfers who want to control the ball's trajectory.
It can be hit with the same feel as an iron, and tends to be preferred by advanced players who want more accurate shots, such as when hitting a low trajectory that is resistant to wind.
How to choose a utility
Utility clubs have large variations in loft angle depending on the manufacturer and model, so it is important to consider the loft angle when choosing a utility club.
The utility club bridges the distance gap between the longest iron in your iron set and the shortest fairway wood.
Check your club setup and consider a utility with a loft angle that will fill in any gaps in your distance.
Shaft selection is also important.
Utilities come in steel and carbon shafts, but the basic rule is to match the shaft weight to that of your irons.
By choosing steel if your irons have heavy steel shafts, or carbon if they have lightweight carbon shafts, you can maintain the swing balance of the entire club and swing it smoothly.
The number of utilities included in a club setup depends on a golfer's playing style and preferred clubs.
If you are not good at using long irons (such as the 4th or 5th iron), it is common to include one or two utilities instead.
For example, if you are not good at using a 5-iron, you can choose a utility club with a loft angle of around 25 degrees instead. This club will be useful in strategic situations such as second shots on long holes or long short holes.
What is the approximate distance a utility club can fly?
A utility club is often used when aiming for a distance of around 150 to 200 yards.
The approximate distance to hit the ball will vary depending on the golfer's head speed, gender, and strengths and weaknesses, but the table below serves as a general guide.
However, this is only a guideline and may vary depending on the individual.
| item | Male golfer | Female golfer | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head speed | 43m/s | 40m/s | 37m/s | 30m/s |
| 3U (19 degrees) |
Approximately 210 yards | Approximately 190-200 yards | Approximately 180-190 yards | - |
| 4U (22 degrees) |
Approximately 200 yards | Approximately 180-190 yards | Approximately 170 to 180 yards | Approximately 140 to 150 yards |
| 5U (25 degrees) |
Approximately 190 yards | Approximately 170 to 180 yards | Approximately 160-170 yards | Approximately 130-140 yards |
| 6U (28 degrees) |
Approximately 180 yards | Approximately 160-170 yards | Approximately 150 to 160 yards | Approximately 120-130 yards |
The utility club combines the benefits of both an iron and a fairway wood, making it an important club for many golfers.
Golfers who are particularly weak at long irons can expect a wide tolerance for errors and consistent distance.
It will be useful on long holes and the second shot on longer middle holes.
Utilities for Beginners
For beginners, we recommend a wood-type utility club, which allows you to easily get the ball up in the air.
Wood types have large heads and are designed with a deep center of gravity, which creates a wide sweet spot and allows for stable distance and direction even with slight mishits.
In particular, models with a low face height, known as a shallow face, make it easier for the ball to rise, allowing even beginners to easily hit a high trajectory.
We also recommend models with a neck shape called a gooseneck. With a gooseneck, the face is positioned further back than the shaft, which can help reduce slicing.
Additionally, models with larger club heads provide a sense of psychological security, allowing you to relax when addressing the ball.
By keeping these points in mind when making your selection, you will be able to enjoy golf more.

■The "BiFLEX FACE" and "New CANNON SOLE" deliver high, long distances. ■BiFLEX FACE: From the toe side to the heel side of the face, the rigidity of each face surface and the outer periphery of the frame is optimized. By increasing deflection on center to off-center shots, the high initial velocity area is expanded. ■New CANNON SOLE: The lower part of the face inside the sole is designed like a cannon, and the thinner sole improves ball speed near the actual impact point. Furthermore, the thicker sections at the toe and heel are further expanded to further lower the center of gravity. ■REBOUND FRAME: A four-layer structure with softer deflection areas and harder fulcrum areas, alternating. The synergistic effect with the "BiFLEX FACE" significantly improves ball speed. ■Lightweight Crown: The crown is made thinner and lighter. The resulting excess weight is effectively deployed in a low, deep center of gravity design, increasing the moment of inertia. ■Step Crown: By creating a step between the face and back sides, ball speed is improved while maintaining a low center of gravity. ■Flat Cup Face: The thickness of the center of the face is designed to be thin and large, allowing the entire face to easily flex, resulting in a high initial velocity. ■ActivWing: Controls the aerodynamic forces generated during the downswing. By stabilizing the head, it enables a stable impact and achieves a high initial velocity.

The ELYTE utility also features the Ai 10x FACE, which increases control points to simultaneously achieve high levels of speed and forgiveness. Another key feature is the addition of a function that allows for adjustments to the trajectory tailored to each individual player. First, trapezoidal weights of different weights are attached to the toe and heel of the rear sole. This was adopted in response to feedback from tour players. By switching the two weights, ball flight can be adjusted within a range of approximately 12 yards to the left or right. Of the three models in the series, the ELYTE MAX FAST utility does not feature the New OptiFit 4 adjustable hosel newly introduced in the other two models, but instead opts for a bonded hosel for a lighter feel. This type of club generates high head speed and ball speed through a smooth swing all the way to the finish, allowing for a gentle, large parabolic trajectory. It is available in six lofts, from 3H to 8H. This lineup allows for a variety of combinations with irons.

New Carbon Fly Wrap Technology
The new carbon fly wrap expands the carbon area and repositions excess weight in the crown to the bottom for a lower center of gravity. This hybrid design combines height and distance with a center of gravity that flies higher (compared to the previous model).
New free hosel design
By reducing the weight of the hosel section inside the head, the center of gravity is lowered, resulting in a "flying center of gravity." This achieves a high trajectory and maximum distance.
■New head shape
The head shape is shallower than the previous model, making it easier to hit the ball. The face is also about 5% thinner, resulting in an even lower center of gravity. This hybrid delivers a high trajectory and high initial velocity, allowing you to aim for the pin. (Compared to the previous model)

The QUANTUM Utility Series delivers the power of Speed Wave 2.0, combining high, long distance with maneuverability.
The QUANTUM Utility was developed with the goal of optimizing launch angle and impact point. This utility club features the new Speed Wave 2.0 design, an evolution of the Speed Wave structure featured in the previous ELYTE Fairway Wood, which is positioned inside the sole. Its increased deflection minimizes ball speed loss even when impacting the lower part of the face, achieving high launch and consistent distance performance. The club also features the latest OptiFit 4 adjustable hosel, which offers a wide variety of loft and lie angle combinations, allowing golfers to tailor their trajectory to their individual needs. The new step sole design also provides improved release, further enhancing the club's overall refinement.
■Speed Wave 2.0 is bonded to the sole. Like the fairway wood series, the QUANTUM utility series also features Speed Wave 2.0 built into the head for even greater speed. Similar to the improved version of the ELYTE fairway wood, the overall width is narrower in the toe-to-heel direction while the distance between the front and back is increased accordingly. The front end is also moved as far as possible from the back of the face, and the height above the inside of the sole is designed to be as low as possible. This allows for an extension of the hinge section (the L-shaped bend) below the face cup, increasing deflection even when impacting the lower part of the face, minimizing ball speed loss. This achieves high launch and consistent distance performance. The shallow center of gravity design also improves head control at impact. In the utility series, the Speed Wave 2.0 is not secured with screws but is instead bonded to the inside of the sole.
Equipped with Optifit 4 hosel, which offers a wide variety of loft and lie angle settings. Like the ELYTE utility, it is equipped with an adjustable hosel called Optifit 4. Not only does it make it easier for each golfer to achieve their preferred trajectory, but it also allows them to more appropriately adjust the distance gap between clubs.
■Features an evolved step sole design. Like the QUANTUM fairway woods, this new model features an improved step sole design. The center of the step is more triangular than the traditional trapezoidal shape. This improves the sole's release while maintaining head stability at address. ■Continued adoption of AI design. The face incorporates Callaway's long-standing AI design (designed specifically for each model and club). AI is used to design the face, incorporating realistic swing and trajectory data from numerous golfers. While the face is more prone to deflection at impact, the AI-designed control points have been further strengthened, resulting in greater trajectory correction. Optimizing launch angle and spin rate for each impact point delivers consistent ball speed, delivering the ball to a narrower, farther landing area.
■MAX and MAXFAST each have their own distinctive head shapes.
The QUANTUMMAX Utility has a slimmer overall shape with less bulge at the back of the head. It's easier to control, more like an iron. It's available in five lofts: 3H (19 degrees), 4H (21 degrees), 5H (24 degrees), 6H (27 degrees), and 7H (30 degrees), all of which feature the OptiFit 4 hosel. The toe and heel of the sole are equipped with trapezoidal weights (approximately 3g and 13g, respectively).
The QUANTUMMAX FAST Utility features a slightly larger bulge at the rear of the head, a more boxy toe and heel profile, and a shallower profile. This head design offers a more secure feel. Also noteworthy is the different style of grooves on the face compared to the QUANTUMMAX Utility, making it easier to set the club at address. It's available in six different lofts (3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 7H, and 8H) than the QUANTUMMAX Utility, but each loft is one degree higher than the QUANTUMMAX Utility, making it easier to launch the ball into the air. The OptiFit 4 hosel is used in all lofts. Trapezoidal weights (approximately 3g and 9g) are also located at the toe and heel of the rear end of the sole.
*Torque wrench is not included.

With its high initial velocity and high launch design, it's easy to hit and aim accurately.
The crown is more rounded than the previous model, making it easier to set up. A #6 has been added to the lineup. The neck area and face progression (FP) have been adjusted to avoid a goose neck appearance. The sizes and FP have been flowed to allow for a natural progression from #3-#4-#5-#6. Increased moment of inertia provides stable straight-line accuracy. A shorter center of gravity distance makes it easier to hit the ball squarely.
[Ball Flight Adjustment - 8-Directional Variable Cartridge] An 8-direction variable cartridge is adopted to maximize the possibilities of ball flight adjustment. The optimal position can be freely selected to match the course, conditions, and strategy. [Precision-Driven, Limit-Effect Design] The high-strength maraging face has been thinned to the limit. High-precision CNC milling thoroughly eliminates variations due to individual differences, resulting in a rule-limit-driven design. [Center of Gravity Design] Achieves a center of gravity and a low, deep center of gravity. High trajectory and optimal spin trajectory increase distance and catch the green. [VENTUS FOR PRGR] While having a substantial weight, it has a rigidity that does not feel awkward and allows for a solid swing. Shaft weight (3UT): 77g (S), 67g (SR). ■SLE rule compliant. *Torque wrench sold separately.

AKA to a New Stage
The new structure creates a high trajectory, allowing you to control distance and club selection as you wish. A utility club that lets you hit far and aim precisely, with a wide range of choices.
■ High-rigidity sole plate and high-strength maraging cup face. The structural evolution with a high-strength maraging cup face and high-rigidity sole plate significantly improves rebound performance. Energy loss is suppressed and a powerful trajectory is produced. ■ Head structure that balances distance and spin stability. The carbon crown + high-strength maraging cup face structure enhances rebound performance and ensures the appropriate amount of spin, resulting in stable distance. ■ Face laser milling. The amount of spin is stabilized even when the point of impact is off, achieving trajectory stability. The milling density is low near the center to increase distance with low spin. The milling density is high around the periphery to ensure a high amount of spin for trajectory stability. ■ Center of gravity design that is easy to grip. By placing a weight screw at the rear of the sole plate, the center of gravity angle is larger than the previous model, making it even easier to grip. This is the first AKA utility to be equipped with a weight screw. ■ Leading edge. The rounded leading edge allows for a smooth swing even from the ground, supporting stable shots. ■ AKA original shaft born from DAIWA's carbon technology. While increasing the bending rigidity at the grip end, it also achieves good grip and smooth flex return. Furthermore, prioritizing control performance, the bending rigidity at the tip is not made too high, and the torsional rigidity is strengthened. This shaft is specially designed for AKA utility clubs to maximize distance and accuracy. ■ Ball flight adjustment by weight replacement. By replacing the weight screw (sold separately) on the head, the weight and balance can be adjusted to suit each individual golfer. The standard specification comes with a 5g weight. ■ Ball flight adjustment with sleeve. Equipped with the first sleeve adjustment function in AKA utility clubs, the range of adjustment for loft angle and lie angle has been expanded. You can finely adjust to the specifications that suit you. ■ Cross Balance Technology. Balance adjustment to match your swing is possible with the weight screw and GR CBT grip sold separately. By replacing the weight screw which is common to both the head and grip, the "Cross Balance Technology" allows you to easily adjust not only the head weight but also the grip weight, bringing out optimal performance. ■ SLE rule compliant.

By stabilizing the head, it enables a stable impact and achieves a high initial velocity.

summary
The key to choosing a utility club is the balance between the loft angle and the shaft. By choosing a loft angle that fills the gap in distance compared to an iron set and adjusting the shaft weight, you can swing it smoothly. In many cases, a wood type is recommended, as it makes it easier to get the ball up in the air and is more forgiving of mistakes. Finding a utility club that suits your playing style is the shortcut to improving your score.
