What is a golf wedge?
There are many different types of golf clubs, but they can be broadly divided into three categories: woods, irons, and putters. Wedges are a type of iron, and are primarily used to hit short distances, such as around the green or to escape a bunker.
Wedges can be divided into pitching wedges (PW), sand wedges (SW), approach wedges (AW), and lob wedges (LW).
Generally, when it comes to wedges from the same series as irons, pitching wedges are marked with P or Pw, and approach wedges with A or Aw. Wedges sold separately are marked with the loft angle, such as 52 or 56.
PW (Pitching Wedge) Characteristics
PWs (pitching wedges) are often included in iron sets and are primarily used for short distance shots around the green. They typically have a loft angle of around 44-48 degrees, making them versatile clubs that can be used in a variety of situations, from full shots to half shots.
AW (Approach Wedge) Features
The AW (approach wedge) is a club that plays a role between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. Its loft angle is typically around 48-52 degrees, and it is useful when you want to hit accurate distances for approach shots around the green or over bunkers. By filling the gap between the PW and SW, it allows you to hit more precise distances.
Characteristics of SW (sand wedge)
The SW (sand wedge) is a club designed to be used primarily for bunker shots. The loft angle is typically around 54-58 degrees, and many have a wide sole and a large bounce angle, allowing for a smooth swing without sinking too far into the sand. It is effective not only for bunker shots, but also for escaping from deep rough and for high approach shots.
Characteristics of LW (lob wedge)
The LW (lob wedge) is the club with the largest loft angle of all wedges. The loft angle is generally over 60 degrees, and it is useful in situations where you want to hit the ball high and land it on the green in a short distance. For example, it is used when the pin is close by or when you want to stop the ball quickly after crossing a hazard. It requires high skill, but mastering it will enable you to make delicate approaches.
How to choose a wedge?
There are a few important points to consider when choosing a wedge.
First of all, the loft angle is the most important factor in determining the height and distance of the ball. It is important to choose a wedge that will fill the distance gap with your iron set, from pitching wedge to sand wedge to lob wedge.
Next, the bounce angle is the angle at which the club bounces off the ground. The larger the bounce angle, the more resistant you are to duffing and the easier it is to hit shots from bunkers or the rough. Conversely, a small bounce angle is suitable for shots from hard ground or shallow lies.
The shape of the sole is also important. Wide soles are more tolerant of mistakes, while narrow soles offer better maneuverability.
In recent years, some manufacturers have begun to grind the soles of their wedges, offering multiple sole shapes (grinds). These have the effect of making it easier to open the face or improving release from certain lies, allowing you to choose a wedge that suits your playing style and the conditions of the courses you often play on.
The shape of the grooves affects the amount of backspin, which determines how easily the ball stops. The material and head finish affect the feel, spin performance, and even the durability of the club. Forged soft iron wedges, in particular, have a soft feel and are preferred by golfers who seek delicate control.
The shaft is also an important factor when choosing a wedge. It is essential to choose a wedge shaft taking into account the weight balance with the shafts of the iron set. Generally, wedge shafts tend to be set to be the same weight as the iron shafts or slightly heavier.
For example, if your irons are lightweight steel (in the 90g range), choose a shaft of the same weight as the irons, or choose a steel shaft in the 100g range that is about 10 to 20g heavier.
This is because it minimizes any discomfort in swing feel when switching from irons to wedges, and is expected to reduce mistakes on short-distance approach shots. If the shaft materials (steel and carbon) are different between the iron set and wedge, the weight difference will be large, which can lead to a discomfort in the swing, so it is recommended to choose models that are as close in weight as possible.
By considering multiple points that suit your swing and playing style, you can choose the best wedge.
Choosing a wedge to match your club setup
When deciding how many wedges to buy, it's important to consider the loft of your iron set and how to fill the distance gap between each club. Generally, you'll want to place the other wedges at an appropriate interval between the loft of your pitching wedge (PW) and the loft of your longest wedge (e.g., sand wedge).
For example, if your PW has a loft angle of 44 degrees, adding an approach wedge (AW) of around 50 degrees and a sand wedge (SW) of around 56 degrees will create a flow of lofts of about 6 degrees each, making it clearer what distance you want to hit with each club. This will reduce confusion on shots within 100 yards, directly affecting your score.
Additionally, if you are including three or more wedges, it is ideal to consider their roles as pitching wedge, approach wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge, etc. and align the loft angles at intervals of 4 to 6 degrees. It is a good idea to decide how many wedges to allocate, taking into account the overall composition of your club set, especially the number of fairway woods and utilities.

Aged for approximately 19 months, the new Callaway OPUS wedge boasts exquisite form and spin performance. The name is inspired by a winery that produces some of California's finest wines. This shows just how exceptional the model was. The shape, with a slightly rounded leading edge and a more pronounced teardrop shape, was perfected through repeated refinements based on careful communication with tour players. The face retains the sharp corners of the 37V grooves, while narrowing the groove width and spacing to increase the number of grooves by two compared to the previous model, significantly improving spin performance and control, especially in rough and wet lies. The OPUS wedge retains the blasting process of the popular JAWS FORGED wedge and retains Callaway's signature microfeatures.

【Features&Benefits】

The Frog's Running wedge makes approach shots easier and leads to higher scores. It's recommended for golfers who struggle with approach shots from around the green or the fairway. ■ It has the same lie angle as a putter (70 degrees) and the same loft as a short iron. The thick grip and white sight lines make it easy to align the club with the target, allowing you to set up like a putter and hit the ball like a putter, resulting in easy access to the pin. The loft angle is 42 degrees. It's between a 9-iron and a PW, making it easy to imagine a roll and less prone to misses. ■ The swipe sole reduces misses. ONOFF's unique sole design allows for smooth, gliding shots without digging into the grass. ■ The crank neck design allows the entire face to be used, even at the heel. ■ The thick, heavy grip, designed specifically for the Frog's Running wedge, reduces strain on the approach shot and provides added stability. ■ Use two helpful wedges to make your approach shots easier and more comfortable. Onoff's Frogs Running and Frogs Leap wedges are designed to help golfers who struggle with approaches and bunker shots. These two easy-to-use wedges, featuring a unique frog design, are designed to help. For golfers who struggle with approach shots from around the green or from the fairway, we recommend the Frogs Running. The design allows you to set up like a putter and sweep the ball across the grass, allowing you to easily get close to the pin. ■Complies with the new groove rules.

summary
Wedges are essential clubs for improving your score, so it's important to understand the characteristics of each wedge and how to choose one.
Each wedge – PW, AW, SW, and LW – has a different loft angle and purpose to suit a variety of situations around the green.
When choosing a wedge, it is important to comprehensively consider factors such as the loft angle, which takes into account the difference in distance compared to your iron set, the bounce angle, which determines compatibility with the ground, and the sole shape and grooves. By taking these points into consideration and finding the optimal wedge that suits your golf style, you can improve the accuracy of your approach shots and significantly improve your score.
