New grooves and innovative cavities provide exceptional ball control
Callaway has added a powerful new wedge to its lineup. The OPUS SP Wedge, named after the initials of Spin Per Degree (spin/launch angle), a metric that developers strive for. The face features new 17V grooves with tight pitch, while the sole features a unique cavity. The optimized grooves and center of gravity position deliver high spin and a low, controllable trajectory. Additionally, the new wedge features the Deep Facer Laser, a first for the brand, replacing the familiar microfeatures with a mesh-like texture, contributing to improved spin performance around the green. The head shape retains the Shape 6 design from the previous model, popular among tour pros, and is available in two finishes: chrome and black. Five grinds are available: T, C, X, S, and W.
■17V Groove and Narrow Pitch SPIN GEN 2 Technology
While maintaining the sharp edge of the previous 37V grooves, the groove volume was reduced and the pitch narrowed, resulting in two additional grooves. This significantly increases spin, especially in rough or wet lies, while also reducing launch angle. This significantly improves control when aiming at the target. For the newly released "OPUS SP Wedge," further testing was conducted to achieve spin performance that exceeds that of the OPUS wedge. The result was the 17V groove, with a sharper groove angle than the OPUS wedge, called "SPIN GEN 2 Technology." The new wedge generates greater spin than the OPUS wedge, not only in dry conditions but also from tough lies, while reducing launch angle inconsistency, allowing you to get the ball to the target exactly how you want it.
■ Unprecedented gear effect with "SPIN POCKET"
Another notable feature of the OPUS SP Wedge is its innovative approach to optimizing the center of gravity. The face is forged from S25C soft iron, while the body is cast from S20C soft iron, and then welded together to create a two-piece structure. The most notable feature is the "SPIN POCKET" located inside the sole. The intentionally hollow design distributes the excess weight created by this cavity to the top blade and hosel, enabling the highest center of gravity position in Callaway's history. The resulting high gear effect of the OPUS SP Wedge, combined with the 17v grooves, delivers impressive spin performance.
■ Shape 6 form inherited from OPUS
The OPUS SP Wedge head inherits the Shape 6 design introduced with the OPUS wedge. (54-60°) This design was finally adopted after approximately 19 months of prototyping and repeated iterations based on feedback from tour players. The "6" refers to the sixth prototype. One of the key features of Shape 6 is the leading edge, which is intermediate in roundness between the JAWS RAW and JAWS FORGED wedges. While straighter wedges like the JAWS RAW wedge appear to point in a completely different direction when the face is open, some have expressed concerns that the JAWS FORGED wedge's shape is too rounded. This design took these concerns into consideration. The overall head features a teardrop-shaped top blade, with the heel end neither too low nor too high. The hosel and face transition is a very smooth curve, rather than the traditional concave design. Additionally, the 48-52° wedge designs feature a design that creates a seamless transition from the PW. Another thing to note is that the leading edge and top blade are now slightly straighter, giving it an iron-like appearance.
Deep Facer Laser: Increases spin with rough processing
The OPUS SP Wedge's face uses a Deep Facer Laser instead of conventional microfeatures. By creating a mesh-like texture with a laser in areas without grooves, the face generates more friction than microfeatures, contributing to increased spin. Naturally, it's also effective when hitting approach shots with the face open.
■CALLAWAY block logo gives a fresh impression
The eight-letter CALLAWAY logo on the back face may offer a fresh look to the user. Instead of the previous logo, which featured curved letters combined with a chevron mark, a linear block logo has been adopted, with the chevron mark placed independently on the bounce. Two head finishes are available: chrome and black. Seven lofts are available, ranging from 48 to 60 degrees in 2-degree increments. The X grind has been revived for a total of five sole shapes, including the T, C, X, S, and W grinds.
